Visit to the Philippines and Singapore

Media release

18 February 2014

Minister for Trade and Investment the Hon. Andrew Robb will travel to the Philippines and Singapore from 19-26 February in pursuit of opportunities for Australian business as well as trade talks.

The Philippines visit will include a 20-strong Australian business delegation comprising representatives from a range of companies with an existing commercial presence in the Philippines or an interest in exploring opportunities.

“Australia is already a major foreign investor in the Philippines. The Aquino Government is committed to a program of economic reform which has the potential to open up new areas of cooperation,” Mr Robb said.

He, along with the Minister for Foreign Affairs the Hon. Julie Bishop, will also take part in the Philippines Australia Ministerial Meeting (PAMM) to discuss ways of deepening the economic relationship between the two countries.

Mr Robb will also have other meetings with senior Government leaders, and will attend an Infrastructure Business Forum, with an emphasis on the post Typhoon Haiyan reconstruction efforts. He will also address a Makati Business Club event.

In Singapore, Mr Robb will attend a Ministerial Meeting for the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP). This follows a successful meeting of TPP Ministers in December last year, where significant progress was made on a range of outstanding issues in the 12-party negotiation.

“An ambitious and visionary TPP will provide the trade and investment architecture to support Australia in its aspirations to operate in an integrated, open and transparent Asia-Pacific economic region,” Mr Robb said.

“The removal of trade barriers and enhanced market access for Australian goods and services will be a fundamental part of this outcome, providing opportunities for our businesses and farmers into the future.”

Mr Robb will also meet with senior Government and business leaders to underline Australia’s strong economic credentials and encourage further trade and investment flows between the two countries, and will deliver a keynote address to the Australian Chamber of Commerce (AustCham) in Singapore.
