Working with the United States to drive global and regional prosperity
I was delighted to meet with United States Trade Representative Ambassador Katherine Tai at the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) 12th Ministerial Conference in Geneva on 13 June.
I welcomed the United States’ commitment to regional economic leadership through the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) and the US’ hosting of APEC in 2023, which Australia looks forward to supporting.
Australia has joined the United States and 12 other members to launch discussions on IPEF. I look forward to working closely with Ambassador Tai to build an inclusive Framework that complements regional architecture and supports regional prosperity and resilience.
We discussed our intention to work closely on policy approaches that address the challenges we face around climate, energy and supply chains, including the impact of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine on energy and food security. We also discussed the importance of harnessing the opportunities of the digital economy to improve economic competitiveness and benefit our communities.
Australia and the United States exchanged views on the WTO and how we can work together to strengthen its effectiveness.
The United States is Australia’s most important economic partner, and together, our nations will continue to work towards global and regional prosperity.
