Creating new trade opportunities in Europe

  • Media release

The Morrison Government is investing in new trading opportunities for Australian businesses in Europe with the opening of a new Austrade office in the Netherlands.

Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Dan Tehan said the Netherlands office would strengthen the trading relationship with Europe, creating new opportunities and jobs for Australians.

“The Netherlands is Australia's second largest export market in the EU and is a key entry point for Australian goods distributed across the continent,” Mr Tehan said.

“The office will help Australian companies win business in the Netherlands as well as facilitate foreign direct investment from the Netherlands to Australia.

“The Netherlands is a key partner in Europe and this is an ideal time to leverage our shared values and capabilities.”

“Austrade's expanded presence in Europe will complement our Government's work to negotiate an ambitious free trade agreement with the European Union.”

The Netherlands is the 17th largest global economy and fifth largest in the EU and Australian businesses are already choosing to base their operations in the country:

  • Medical technology company IDE Group has opened its European headquarters in Rotterdam to serve European partners, and to partner with a variety of Dutch life sciences companies, technical universities, incubators and the wider health community.
  • Plug-in electric vehicle fast-charging solutions firm Tritium opened its European Headquarters in Amsterdam with sales, technical customer support and training facilities to meet demand for its products and services from the European region.
  • The Commonwealth Bank of Australia established a Dutch subsidiary in order to provide access to European markets for institutional clients post-Brexit, complementing the existing services provided by the UK subsidiary.
