The Morrison Government is providing $1.5 million to attract more visitors to Phillip Island to support local jobs and businesses.

Member for Monash Russell Broadbent said the money would help fund a major marketing campaign for the island.

“Locals know that Phillip Island is one of the best destinations in Australia, with fantastic beaches, pubs, cafes, restaurants, attractions and penguins,” Mr Broadbent said. “This marketing campaign will target interstate visitors including culturally diverse markets to boost overnight visitation to the region.”

Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Dan Tehan said the Morrison Government was encouraging Australians to take a holiday this year to support the domestic tourism industry.

“Before COVID-19, domestic tourism made up approximately 77 per cent – or $107 billion – of tourism spend,” Mr Tehan said. “Australians spent more than $80 billion on overnight trips in 2019 and more than $26.3 billion on day trips. We need to get domestic spending primed and pumping again.

“This marketing campaign will highlight the wonderful attractions that Phillip Island has to offer and will attract even more visitors to the region.”

Destination Phillip Island General Manager Kim Storey said it was important for the region to plan for the future.

“The Phillip Island region is highly dependent on tourism from both domestic and international markets,” Mrs Storey said. “This valuable support from the Commonwealth Government will help stimulate visitation from interstate markets supporting local jobs.

The funding is provided through the Recovery for Regional Tourism (RRT) Program, which is part of the Morrison Government’s $1 billion COVID-19 Relief and Recovery Fund.
