Australia's screen production expertise highlighted in new report

Today I launch the Australian Screen Production Industry Capability Report, which demonstrates the talent and expertise of the Australian screen industry to potential international partners and investors.

The report comes as the Turnbull Government announces $22 million to secure Australia as the filming location for the blockbuster feature film Aquaman, the next DC superhero movie by Warner Bros Pictures.

The Turnbull Government has collaborated with the screen industry to produce the report, showcasing Australia's competitive strengths and advantages. The report notes that in the last five years an average 50 feature films were produced in Australia each year. Around 30 were Australian films, three were co-productions under formal treaty arrangements, and 17 were international productions – with a total production spend in Australia of $390 million annually.

More than 450 hours of local Australian television drama are made each year (not counting programs for children) with an average annual production expenditure of $274 million. There are more than 360 businesses around Australia delivering post-production, digital and visual (PDV) effects services, including editing, design, music composition and scoring, as well as animation, character generation and visual effects.

The report also highlights some of the contributions made by Australian firms to such iconic films as The LEGO® Movie, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Mad Max: Fury Road.

Australia has co-production treaty arrangements with other significant contributors to the global film making industry including Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Israel, Korea, Singapore, South Africa and the United Kingdom, and memorandums of understanding with France and New Zealand.

Four films have been made under the treaty with China, one of our newest partners, including by Australian director, Pauline Chan, who has been developing her Mandarin-language romantic comedy My Extraordinary Wedding.
