Visit to Japan

I will visit Japan this week to hold talks with senior Japanese counterparts on bilateral regional and global trade developments.

During the visit, my counterpart Mr Hiroshige Seko, Minister for Economy, Trade and Industry will host the first Japan-Australia Ministerial Economic Dialogue.

The dialogue will explore new ways to promote the open and rules-based international trade order that supports our economic prosperity as trading nations.

I will also meet with Japan's Minister responsible for the Trans Pacific Partnership, Toshimitsu Motegi to discuss progress towards the entry into force of the agreement which brings together 11 regional economies with a combined GDP of $13.7 trillion.

I will also lead a delegation of young business leaders to Japan to strengthen trade and investment ties between our countries.

The delegation of 13 Australian entrepreneurs will explore new–technology based opportunities in the 'future cities' sector, an innovative area aimed at enhancing the quality and sustainability of our cities.

With young Australian agricultural leaders, I will visit the Ota markets to see the Australian produce reaching Japanese consumers under preferential access provided by the Japan Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA).

The visit will also provide the opportunity to acknowledge the return of historic records of Japanese companies based in Australia, which were seized during World War II.

The records tell the story of the long-standing contribution of Japanese companies to Australia, which continues to this day. I will also open an Australian short film festival in

Tokyo to promote our vibrant film industry, high-quality food and beverages, and attractiveness as a tourism destination.
