'Sunrise Industries' - capitalising on new emerging industries in the ASEAN region

Personal health and ageing, nextgeneration energy storage and autonomous systems are just some of the emerginghigh-growth industries identified in a new report that will fuel futureregional growth and job creation in our region.

Today the Sunrise Industries report byData61, CSIRO's data sciences and technology arm, was launched at the Associationof Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit.

The report identifies seven emergingindustries in ASEAN and neighbouring nations, including Australia, which willgenerate jobs and growth. They are:

  • Artificialintelligence and autonomous systems
  • Financialand regulatory services technology
  • Highvalue nutrition
  • Nextgeneration energy storage and distribution
  • Cyber-physicalsystems security
  • Personalhealth and ageing
  • Digitalinfrastructure and connectivity

Launching thereport today, the Minister for Jobs and Innovation, Michaelia Cash outlined theopportunities to work with our ASEAN neighbours to generate new streams ofeconomic growth and employment in Australia and ASEAN.

"Many of theemerging industries identified in the Sunrise Industries report are areas inwhich Australia already has expertise and a competitive advantage," saidMinister Cash.

"To increase ourinnovation capacity we are taking a global outlook. In particular, the forecasthigh growth in the ASEAN region economy provides a great opportunity forAustralia to pursue collaborative research and development with our closestneighbours."

Australia hasstrong economic ties with ASEAN member countries and last financial year,Australia's trade with these countries amounted to over AUD $100 billion.

Ministerfor Trade, Tourism and Investment, Steven Ciobo, noted the significance ofemerging industries to Australia's future trade and investment relationshipwith ASEAN.

"Agile,innovative Australian businesses should seize the opportunities presented bythe region's growing digitisation, particularly for services industries.

"Emergingsectors, such as those at the centre of this report, will help drive exportgrowth and create the export jobs of the future."

The ASEAN regionis expected to become the equivalent of the world's fourth largest economy by2030. There's the potential for enormous economic benefit as we help ASEANcountries make the transition to a digital economy.
