ASEAN Ministerial Meetings
I am visiting the Lao People's Democratic Republic to attend the ASEAN Economic Ministers Closer Economic Relations consultations, East Asia Summit Economic Ministers Meeting and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Ministerial Meeting.
I will meet with trade and economic ministers from the Southeast Asian region and other key partners to promote economic growth and ensure the long-term prosperity of our people. This region provides compelling economic opportunities for Australian business including in agriculture, services and investment.
Collectively, the economies of Southeast Asia comprise Australia's second-largest trading partner, accounting for 14.3 per cent of Australia's total trade.
During the meetings my counterparts and I will discuss the next intensive stage of RCEP negotiations. A successfully concluded RCEP will build upon the opportunities for Australian business and boost economic confidence in the region at a time when global economic growth is subdued.
This will be my first official visit to Lao PDR. I look forward to meeting the Lao Minister for Industry and Commerce, HE Mrs Khemmani Pholsena, and members of The Australian Chamber of Commerce Lao PDR to discuss how the Australian Government can further support greater commercial engagement in the region and strengthen the bilateral trade and investment relationship.
