The Turnbull Coalition Government’s new multi-million dollar Boosting Business Events Bid Fund Program is already delivering, securing a major event for Australia.

In March this year I launched the Bid Fund, which has helped to secure the world’s largest public transport event, the Union International des Transports Publics Global Public Transport Summit 2021.

This is the first event to be supported by the Bid Fund Program, a $12 million fund managed by Tourism Australia’s Business Events Australia unit to give Australian event bidders a competitive edge against other international destinations.

The Summit will be held in Melbourne and is estimated to deliver a $9.4 million boost to the economy.

The four-day event will see 2,000 delegates from all over the world meet at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from in June 2021. This is a fantastic coup for Australia and I'd like to acknowledge the Melbourne Convention Bureau for their efforts in securing this event.

The Program funding specifically goes towards the delivery of the event in Australia, meaning every dollar spent supports local jobs through accommodation bookings, transport and venue hire, ultimately sending every dollar back into the Australian economy.

Business events visitors spend on average twice that of a leisure visitor and business events expenditure in 2017 was worth $4.75 billion, bringing more than 1 million international visitors to Australia. The Turnbull Coalition Government continues to invest record funding into Tourism Australia to create more tourism jobs and drive economic growth.
