Minister for Trade and Investment, Andrew Robb today announced the appointments of Andrew Fairley, Anna Guillan and Tony South to the Tourism Australia Board of Directors. All appointments came into effect on 1 July 2014 for a period of three years.

“Tourism Australia promotes our compelling tourism story to the world through leading campaigns such as There’s Nothing Like Australia and its food and wine campaign Restaurant Australia,” Minister Robb said.

“I am confident that the new Board members will build on this position of strength and support the tourism industry to reach its ambitious Tourism 2020 target of doubling overnight visitor expenditure to more than $115 billion by the end of the decade.

“I look forward to working with the new Board and thank retiring members Janet Whiting, Terri Janke and Didier Elzinga for their significant contribution.

Tourism Australia Chair Geoff Dixon added that he welcomed the three senior and well respected industry figures to the Tourism Australia Board.

"Tony, Andrew and Anna bring a wealth of experience in travel, tourism and hospitality, which will further strengthen the Tourism Australia Board and help guide Australia's national tourism organisation into the future,” Mr Dixon said.

"I have every confidence that each of our three new Board members will make a significant contribution, based upon their impressive individual skill sets, hands on tourism industry experience and collective business acumen."

Biographies of the new board members

Andrew Fairley

Mr Andrew Fairley has had a distinguished association with ecotourism, conservation, parks and resort management over many years and significant international tourism experience. He is a previous Director of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, a Director of world-class five star resort Turtle Island in the Yasawas for over 20 years and a past Director of International Ecotourism Society (Washington DC) and Ecotourism Australia.

Currently, Andrew is a Director of Parks Victoria and on the Board of Tourism Victoria.  He was previously Chair of the Zoos Victoria Board, Chair of the Alpine Resorts Coordinating Council in Victoria, a member of the Falls Creek Alpine Resort Management Board and Chairman of Sundowner Motels Group.

Andrew is a leading superannuation lawyer and has significant corporate governance experience. He is Chairman of Equisuper which manages $6.5 billion in energy and water assets, is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees and a fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He is a member of the Law Institute of Victoria is regarded as one of Australia’s leading superannuation lawyers.

Andrew is involved in a number of charities including the Sir Andrew Fairley Foundation which focuses on providing opportunities in regional Australia, Chair of the national Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education and Patron of the Centre for Eye Research Australia.

He has been awarded a number of prestigious accolades in the tourism sector including the 2006 Australian Travel Innovators Award from Travel +Leisure and the Visionary in Tourism Award 2006 from the Fiji Tourism Industry.

Originally from Shepparton in Victoria, he is also the Consul General for Finland in Victoria.

Anna Guillan

Anna Guillan is currently the Regional Director, Sales and Marketing (Australia and New Zealand) for Kerzner International, a global operator of luxury resorts.

Ms Guillan is currently a board member of Tourism and Events Queensland as well as being a Non-Executive Director of Care Flight and Co-founder and Director of cancer support group The Nelune Foundation.

Ms Guillan has previously had a number of tourism roles including Vice-Chair of the Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) from 2004 to 2010, a member of the Advisory Panel for the Southern Cross University’s School of Hospitality and Tourism, Executive General Manager of Sales and Marketing at Voyages Hotels and Resorts, Executive General Manager Sales and Marketing for Hayman and Mulpha Resorts Australia and Director Sales and Marketing, Intercontinental Hotel Sydney. 

Tony South

Tony South was appointed as Chairman of Tourism Accommodation Australia in March 2012, following his retirement in 2011 as Chief Development Officer of InterContinental Hotels Group Asia Pacific. He held this role from 2008, and was based in Singapore for nine years with overall Asia Pacific responsibility for IHGs regional growth. He is highly regarded for his outstanding local and global career with IHG and has returned to Sydney.

Tony was also Managing Director of then publicly listed hotel investment company TAHL (Tourism Asset Holdings Ltd) and Managing Director of the former Sydney Visitors and Convention Bureau. Mr South is a former board member of Tourism NSW and Deputy Chair of TTF Australia, where he is also a life member. Tony is also a Director of Confederation of Australian Motor Sport Ltd and of Campus Living Funds Management Ltd.

As a Chartered Accountant, Tony has more than 40 years accounting, management, property brokerage and consulting experience, mostly in Tourism, hospitality and leisure sectors.

In 2013 Tony was honoured with a prestigious international accommodation industry 'Trailblazer Award' in recognition of his outstanding accommodation industry career.
