Media release

3 November 2012

An implementation plan and team have been established for the Asian Century White Paper, including business experts to advise the Government.

Trade and Competitiveness Minister Craig Emerson, who is assisting the Prime Minister on Asian Century policy, today announced that an implementation unit had been established in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, staffed by officials from agencies across the Commonwealth.

A Strategic Advisory Board of external experts will advise the Government on implementation of the White Paper and on emerging policy issues.

Dr Ken Henry, Professor Peter Drysdale, Mr John Denton and Catherine Livingstone, who helped develop the White Paper, have all agreed to stay on as members of the Advisory Board.

A special Cabinet Committee will consider the implementation of policy. It includes the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer, Minister for Finance and Deregulation, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Minister for Defence, Minister for School Education, Minister for Industry and Innovation, Minister for Tertiary Education and Skills, Science and Research, and the Minister for Trade and Competitiveness.

All Ministers have specific responsibilities for White Paper policy within their own portfolios.

“This is a whole-of-government project to secure the long-term prosperity of our nation,” Dr Emerson said.
